This has all the makings of a tight game though and its just very hard to see there being many goals. Alaves are yet to score this season and have lost their best attacking player from last season with Munir returning to Barcelona. Theyll be hoping somebody like new signing Borja Bastn can step up but he looks a shadow of his former self following a couple of tough years since a prolific season at Eibar.

The Budgerigars picked up four out of possible six points from two opening games in spite of having a tricky schedule with outings against Celta Vigo and Valencia. Rubis men were especially impressive in the 2-0 victory over the Bats last weekend. Can they keep such form going and get more points on the board after the trip to Vitoria-Gazteiz?

Highlighted Team (Alaves):

Theyve only conceded 3 goals in their last 7 league matches so defensively they are pretty solid and they will fancy they can keep the Alaves forward-line quiet. Alaves dont look like a team that has many goals in them. You might have said the same about Espanyol following the sale of Gerard Moreno but they have done okay so far, surprisingly beating Valencia.

They are in risk of losing out on a place in Europe and need to make up a deficit of just one point in the next seven games. Finally, take into account that the last eight home ties of Espanyol saw them conceding. Alaves will not make it easy though. Also, they found the back of the net in three of their last four away ties and did so twice or more in two of the last three.

The Catalan side are tough to beat at home and they are definitely capable of grabbing something from Saturdays football match. Espanyol will be aiming to build on a 2-1 win at Girona when they host Deportivo Alaves at their RCDE Stadium. Deportivo Alaves, on the other hand, dropped two points in a 1-1 draw with Leganes, but they are still in the race for a place in European competitions. Los Periquitos did well to get back on course and they will be looking to climb to the top half of the La Liga standings with a win over the Basque outfit.

We shouldnt see any great surprises from either coach in terms of the approach though with Espanyol likely to line up with their usual 4-3-3 while the visitors should go 4-4-2 again. This is certainly a bigger game for Alaves who will be hoping to try and defy the critics again and maintain their surprise European push.

The good news for Alaves is that hes likely to be back here but they are missing both Martn Aguirregabiria and Toms Pina to suspension. Defensive solidity has been the foundation for their success this term and the Chilean has certainly had a big role to play. The injury absence of key centre-back Guillermo Maripan has certainly played a part in that. The visitors have only taken 1 point from their last 3 games.

Today's Tips

Espanyol meanwhile are now looking safe on 38 points but they are too far back to get into the European picture. Every time they are written off or suffer a setback, they seem to pull a result out of the bag and theyll be hoping to do likewise here. Alaves have spent the entire season defying the odds by hanging around in the top six.

Most of the minuscule number of wins they were able to record on the road came against relegation-battlers and in friendlies. Espanyol was unbeaten in 15 of their last 20 home ties, and the losses came against the likes of Barcelona, Real Madrid, Sevilla, etc. On the other hand, Alaves was winless in 15 of their last 20 fixtures, and in 16 of their last 23 on the road.
